How to Spend One Day in Trastevere, Rome

Trastevere is my favorite neighborhood in Rome. Just across the river from the large Roman monuments and city streets lies a quaint neighborhood filled with cobblestone streets and green vines.

If you’re staying more than a day in Rome, a visit to Trastevere is a great way to get a glimpse into one of the few places with authentic Roman life.

Where is Trastevere in Rome?

Trastevere is situated on the western bank of the Tiber River within the city of Rome, Italy. This historic neighborhood forms part of Rome, just across the river from the city center and its iconic landmarks–the Colosseum and Roman Forum.

What is Trastevere Known For?

Originally settled by artisans and fishermen in ancient Roman times, Trastevere retains its traditional character with cobblestone streets and medieval architecture.

You can explore landmarks like the Basilica of Santa Maria and enjoy the area's vibrant nightlife, bustling restaurants, and artisan shops.

Due to its authenticity, Trastevere has gained traction from travelers in the past few years.

Best Things To Do in Trastevere

Explore the Charming Streets

Start the journey by wandering Trastevere's narrow cobblestone streets and alleys to ease into the atmosphere of the historic neighborhood. I absolutely love the rich-colored buildings adorned with plants and flowers.

Visit the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere

Visit one of Rome's oldest basilica filled with intricate mosaics, beautiful frescoes, and ornate ceiling. Don't forget to explore the peaceful courtyard and fountain outside too.

Enjoy the Lively Piazzas

Trastevere has a sense of cozy liveliness that you can witness at its squares, such as Piazza di Santa Maria and Piazza Santa Cecilia. These piazzas are perfect for people-watching to get a peek into the local life. Take the afternoon to relax at an outdoor café and watch the world go by.

Climb the Gianicolo Hill

Take a stroll up Gianicolo Hill for panoramic views of Rome. From the top, you can see iconic landmarks such as St. Peter's Basilica, the Pantheon, and the Colosseum.

Visit Tiber Island for Sunset

One of my favorite memories was visiting Tiber Island for golden hour. It’s a small, peaceful island located right in the center of Rome. It's the perfect spot to unwind and admire the beauty of the city as the sun goes down.

It’s also quite cozy, especially during warmer months, as couples and friends enjoy each other's company on the grass or leisurely stroll along the river bank.

Where to Eat in Trastevere

Trastevere has delicious traditional Roman dishes scattered throughout the neighborhood.

The food here is an experience you won’t want to miss so below is a list of the best restaurants in Trastevere.

If the weather is warm, I recommend enjoying your meal at their outdoor tables. During dinner, you’ll get to experience the night coming alive on the charming cobblestone streets.

  • Da Enzo al 29: Offers traditional dishes made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Their carbonara and cacio e pepe pasta dishes are particularly popular.
    • Side Note: This restaurant is rather small so it’s best to make reservations to avoid waiting in line.
  • La Tavernaccia Da Bruno: Family-owned restaurant and widely considered as one of the best Trastevere restaurants.
  • Osteria da Zi Umberto: Relaxed and charming place known for great pastas.
  • Forno Antico La Renella: Casual pizzeria that locals love and have been open since the 19th century.
  • Supplì Roma: Uniquely Italian street food made of rice ball with tomato sauce and mozzarella inside.
  • Vecchia Trastevere: Although this place doesn’t have a history like older Trastevere restaurants, I personally had the best pesto gemelli pasta in my life here.

Trastevere Nightlife

Trastevere at night is an enchanting scene. After the sun sets, Trastevere transforms into a bustling hub of activity until 2-3 in the morning.

You’ll witness groups of friends hanging about and symphonies of chatter on the narrow streets. Whether you're in the mood for craft cocktails in a cozy setting or dancing the night away, Trastevere has something for everyone.

Recap

Trastevere offers an unforgettable journey in Rome with cultural immersion, culinary adventures, and warm sunsets.

From wandering its quaint streets to exploring historic landmarks like the Basilica of Santa Maria, there's plenty to enjoy for a day in Trastevere.
